A high school in Rancho Cucamonga, California is in hot water after a Muslim student was erroneously named “Isis” in the school yearbook.
Los Osos High School’s Bayan Zehlif opened up the yearbook to discover that she was “Isis Phillips.” She later tweeted out a snapshot of the image which, as you might expect, led to quite a bit of social media outrage.
It seems there indeed was an Isis Phillips at Los Osos who “had transferred earlier in the year,” according to a student who worked on the yearbook. She’s still in the district, too, apparently.
The question of how Ms. Zehlif was tagged with the incorrect moniker remains unclear.
Principal Susan Petrocelli has promised an investigation into the matter.

In a Facebook post, Zehlif said, “The school reached out to me and had the audacity to say that this was a typo. I beg to differ, let’s be real.” Yet Petrocelli says, “I would never say it was a typo or a mistake. As I told Bayan’s family, this matter has to be thoroughly investigated first.”
Petrocelli stressed that the school is taking the matter seriously. “If there is a student that has responsibly and intentionally committed this, we will take the appropriate action that is necessary.”
This investigation has only just begun because of when the matter arose, Petrocelli says, adding that they aren’t capable of getting in touch with students until they return to class on Monday. Petrocelli said that the yearbook is put together by a class of Los Osos students, as well as student editors.
Principal Petrocelli is scheduled to meet with Zehlif’s family this morning, and she said she’s “reached out” to the Phillips family.
She added that only 287 yearbooks have thus far been distributed, only to seniors. The rest have been embargoed, and the publishing company has been contacted about correcting the mistake.
