Though it at first seemed like the Purdue community had accepted former Republican Governor Mitch Daniels as president of the university, more students and staff members are raising objections. According to The Huffington Post:
For their part, students have started an organization called Students for an Open and Accountable Purdue in response to the pick. The Lafayette Journal & Courier reports they’re critical of Daniels for cutting education funding repeatedly during his tenure as governor of Indiana, as well as some of this other policies and politics.
SOAP has been planning demonstrations and petitions on their Facebook group and in a page for the Facebook event of Saturday’s protest.
The group has 124 members, and some have already called for Daniels to resign. Here was one such student:
“Mitch Daniels, please step down…”: THIS is the only real recourse we have. The Trustees have already promised Daniels the position in a memorandum of understanding, so Purdue could (I’m pretty sure) be sued if they take it back now. Would he ever actually step down? I don’t know. Maybe if we could embarrass him sufficiently.
It is great to see so many university personnel upset about the influence of politicians on universities. And of course, the next logical step will be to join fiscal conservatives in calling for public universities to be completely divorced from government and taxpayer funding.
Who’s with me? Any takers? Hello?
Oh, I forgot–they just hate Republicans.
