An extremist fringe group from Westboro Baptist Church plans to picket Saturday the University of Missouri football player Michael Sam, who recently announced he is homosexual – but a large, growing number of Mizzou students have banded together to fight back against the infamous “God Hates F*gs” protesters.

“University of Missouri football player Michael Sam (who has prospects to play in the NFL) announced to the world that he’s a f*g,” the highly volatile group states on its website. “Now the race is on to see who can fawn over him the most and make sure that everyone knows they support f*g filth. Columbia, Missouri is now in an uproar, not because the media spotlight is on them for having a proud f*g in their midst, but because Westboro announced their intention to come warn you.”

The budding group #StandwithSam, which offers the tagline “One Wall, One Mizzou,” has organized a counter protest to form a wall of love against the extremists, an unaffiliated Baptist church that most mainstream Christians disavow as completely misguided and vehemently oppose their methods.

As of Wednesday afternoon, nearly 4,500 people had signed up for the counter protest on the #StandwithSam Facebook page, which states:

Let’s make a human wall, just like the students of Texas A&M did when Westboro planned to picket the funeral of a fallen Aggie. Over 650 Aggies came to support the soldier and show a unified front of school spirit — in fact, Westboro didn’…t even show up. Hopefully we can reflect this unity with a unified wall of black and gold.

In response to their signs of hatred and anger, we will form a single line, arm in arm. A sign of One Mizzou.

We understand that each person will have his or her own personal reasons for attending this event, but we can all agree that Westboro’s hate is wrong. The focus of this wall is unification behind Sam to represent this school as One.
