Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder signed a bill last week that prohibits many state agencies from offering health benefits to the domestic partners of employees. It is unclear, however, whether the ban extends to university employees. According to Snyder, the autonomy of Michigan’s public universities exempts them from the ban. But Republican legislators who backed the bill said it covers these employees as well.
The American Civil Liberties Union intends to file suit, and the issue will likely appear before a court.
