Members suspended, probe launched after frat’s dance ‘triggered’ students at charity event

An apology apparently wasn’t enough. Members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at Washington University in St. Louis have been suspended after they choreographed a dance that apparently “triggered” some students who felt it replicated sexual assault.

The president of SAE promptly apologized for the dance, which was performed at a sorority’s charity event. However, Student Life reports the university has launched an investigation into the matter.

From the article:

Washington University is conducting [a] formal investigation, led by the University’s Title IX office in conjunction with Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Kappa Kappa Gamma, into SAE’s performance at Kappa Karaoke March 25.

The performance, part of which appeared to mimic sexual assault, prompted apology letters sent to sorority and fraternity chapter heads the following day. It also led SAE to suspend four fraternity members who choreographed the performance, the organization told Student Life in a statement.

The student newspaper reports the four members “temporarily lose all rights and privileges of membership” during their suspension from SAE. The frat’s dance was reported to the university during the charity event, a Washington University administrator said.

“We received a report around 6 p.m. that Sunday night, so the event was still occurring when we received the initial email,” said David Stetter, Assistant Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life. “I spoke with [SAE and KKG] on Monday, and it was elevated to the Title IX office by Wednesday morning.”

Title IX Director Jessica Kennedy told Student Life the investigation is almost complete, but didn’t give a date of when it might be finished. The possible punishment SAE could receive is also unclear:

According to Kennedy, such investigations can result in a wide range of consequences, including educational programming, community service and suspension of events or groups.
