Meet the ‘Campus Maverick’: Bluefield State president enforces accountability, prudence, business acumen

Many headlines have heralded what Mitch Daniels did for Purdue University and what Gov. Ron DeSantis is doing for higher education in Florida. In short, they infuse sanity and student-forward approaches to higher education that reduce costs and improve curricula.

There’s one college president who is making similar reforms that not many in higher education circles may have heard about, but who deserves closer attention. Robin Capehart is president of Bluefield State University in West Virginia. He calls himself “The Campus Maverick,” which is the name of his relatively new Substack.

In an interview with College Fix Editor Jennifer Kabbany, Capehart spells out some of the reforms he has implement on his campus, including external student learning accountability measures, post-tenure review, and partnerships with the business community.
