Recapping Mad Men "The Summer Man" — sexism and swimming

What a strange episode of Mad Men that was. Voice-over narration used intermittently, no music over the closing credits and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” by The Rolling Stones playing at one point. After last week’s juggernaut of an episode, it was strange how different this one felt. As usual though, it was still a terrific watch that gave viewers some hope that Anna’s death had a permanent effect on Don.

That’s right everyone, Don Draper has cut back on drinking and has even begun exercising. He’s also writing his thoughts in a diary every day instead of avoiding them by going into a soused daze. It’s a refreshing change of pace for the show — I mean honestly, how many episodes can you have Don excessively boozing without it becoming repetitive? This new stage Don has entered might not make for as exciting of drama, but it at least rewards the viewer after making them watch Don downward spiral into oblivion.

But all of the above paragraph isn’t nearly as surprising as the fact that Don acted like something of a gentleman last night to a lady. Instead of immediately hooking up with the agency’s new marketing research consultant, Dr. Miller, he told her he didn’t want to rush things.
