The Louisiana State University chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon is in a bit of trouble after it hung a banner at its house which said “Michael isn’t the Only Sam Getting the D Tonight.” This was based on LSU’s drubbing of Sam Houston State 56-0 in football this past Saturday.
The Times Picayune reports:
The university’s Office of Greek Life, which answers to the Office of the Dean of Students, has plans to meet with the fraternity’s Zeta Zeta chapter regarding the publicly displayed message, LSU Media Relations Director Ernie Ballard said Monday.
Ballard said on Sunday the university didn’t condone the “hurtful actions” of hanging the “offensive banner” and noted the university asked the fraternity to take it down.
Elaine Maccio, an LSU associate professor in the school of social work whose studies focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues, said the sign was “patently offensive,” especially to LGBT people who often struggle with their identity.
“What we don’t need is one more message that says you’re the butt of a joke,” she said.
There was no word on whether Prof. Maccio realized she could have made a better choice of words in that last quote.
