Yesterday, we posted about the likely phasing out of nearly half of Texas undergraduate physics programs under the state’s “25 graduates in five years” rule.
Fourteen degrees at the University of Texas didn’t pass that bar, including Latin (23 grads in the last five years) — but it’s getting a four year extension to increase the number of graduates. Five other majors also received extensions. Greek (zero grads) is right out, though.
“If their plan doesn’t work out we’ve got to close it,” Dominic Chavez, a spokesman for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board told the Daily Texan. “Or if it does, we can tell them congratulations and send them on their merry way. We’re going to give institutions an opportunity to prove the relative strength of their programs and strategies.”
