Jobs, taxes priorities for Ehrlich in run against O'Malley

It’s been nearly four years since the state was under the leadership of former Republican Gov. Bob Ehrlich, but after last night’s primary win, he’s looking to make his way back to Annapolis.

And to do it, he’ll have to face off against the same man who beat him four years ago: Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley.

When asked about Ehrlich’s top priorities in this election, spokesman Andy Barth put it simply: “Creating jobs and lowering taxes.”

“He feels an urgency with the government spending while facing such a deficit,” Barth said

For many students — especially graduating seniors — jobs are a top issue.

But other student voters expressed concern over the issue of tuition. O’Malley successfully froze tuition for four years, and some students said Ehrlich’s history of tuition hikes and apparent disregard for public higher education institutions are troublesome.

“When Robert Ehrlich was governor, he raised the tuition at the University of Maryland by almost 40 percent,” said Daniel Borman, president of the university’s chapter of College Democrats. “I don’t think students can afford another 40 percent increase.”

But Ehrlich’s spokesman said that a tuition freeze is now unreasonable, as it was early in Ehrlich’s term, when the state was facing a significant budget shortfall.
