James Poulos writes at Forbes:
“About 4 million Americans are born every year,” warns David Burge; “about 90k Americans graduate college with art degrees. One out of 44.” With few exceptions, our bitterly divided ideological camps speak as one on education. Up with scientists! Down with artists!
Before we decide to make a policy of that slogan, we’d better perform the due diligence of properly casting blame. The popularity of artistry may not be the culprit it seems. To see why, consider that for a long time now our criticism of artistry has been a criticism of the actor’s mentality. Andy Warhol illustrated how the pinnacle of modern art is to make it all an act, but the primacy of acting in the democratic arts was recognized as early as 1887, when Friedrich Nietzsche broached the subject.
