This week, San Diego State University proudly announced its new graduate-level certificate in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies, proclaiming it as “one of only a handful of like programs in the nation.”
And about two weeks ago on the other side of the country, Cornell University announced the establishment of the first Ph.D. program in Africana studies in New York state.
In unrelated related news, The Chronicle of Higher Education recently highlighted the plight of countless highly educated young adults who go out into the real world and find that a P-H-D. does not always translate into a J-O-B.
And in more unrelated related news, fewer and fewer students want to major in the humanities anymore. The real action is over in STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
Universities continue to operate with their heads in the sand.
