At Inside Higher Ed, Eric Stoller notes that some student athletes are guilty of “thoughtcrime” when they post anything that reflects poorly on the university’s reputation. He also notes the rise of companies that universities can contract to monitor their athletes’ Twitter and Facebook posts:
It really feels more like Orwell’s 1984 than 2012. When did we stop educating our student athletes and start monitoring them for social media “thoughtcrimes,” or even worse, for “brandcrimes”?
