The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is behind an effort to implement a national database of students’ academic records, Inside Higher Ed reports.
Proponents of the database say information about students’ academic records and future salaries will increase accountability among colleges and universities, and will enable students to know more about the results the schools are likely to produce.
However, critics say a national database will violate student privacy and will put students’ personal data at risk of theft or misuse.
