Freedom isn’t free: Remembering those who gave all

Memorial Day is not just about BBQs and beach trips. But it’s OK to enjoy such things today, because the precious freedoms granted Americans was bought and paid for by the blood and lives of our military men and women.

Freedom isn’t free. What that means is our First and Second Amendment rights, and all the ones after that, came at a price. For many, the highest price.

They gave their tomorrows so we can have ours. Let’s take time out of our day to remember those we’ve lost, and thank them for our freedoms.

stanford_vietnammemorialWe live at a time when many Americans take our freedoms and rights for granted. What’s worse, many Americans actively fight to diminish our freedoms. Much of that blame lies with what students are taught by professors in our modern universities.

For example, a University of Arizona constitutional law professor who says he believes the Second Amendment does not grant citizens the right to own guns. Or just take a look at most universities today that actively maintain speech zones and speech codes, inhibiting free speech and teaching young people that’s OK. Indeed, hundreds of colleges maintain policies that clearly and substantially prohibit protected speech, research has shown.

On days like today, it’s more important than ever to remind young people what this exceptional experiment called America is all about. Our great nation is hanging on a precipice. We must always keep in mind the sacrifices our armed service members have made in the name of advancing peace and democracy in this world.

And on Memorial Day above all, we remember the soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen who laid down their lives for those ideals.

Thank you. We salute you. We remember you. And we will always fight to make sure you did not die for nothing. God bless.
