The Sigma Nu fraternity at the University of Central Florida is falling apart in the wake of a video purporting to show one or more of its members, who sound like they’re extremely drunk, making pro-rape comments.
The school has put the chapter on emergency suspension for the so-called “rape chant,” saying the frat is responsible for “condoning or encouraging acts of sexual misconduct” judging by the recorded comments, Knight News reported. Its future will be decided at a full hearing Thursday.
The video follows an earlier police investigation into allegations that a female student was raped at the Sigma Nu house last fall, Knight News reported last month. The national fraternity has already suspended that student, Joaquin Mendoza, and the school found him responsible for the assault.
The national fraternity, which was already investigating the UCF chapter for possible alcohol violations, said it has received the recordings from the local police and the language used on them is “disrespectful, despicable and vile.”
Knight News said it obtained the video from “a source close to the investigation.”
A student who claimed she recorded the video wrote on Facebook that she had been a “Sigma Nu groupie” who “used to spend my nights baking brownies and cookies” for the fraternity, though she has since deleted the post, according to Knight News.
“Their fraternity was built in love, honor, and truth. But that isn’t what they stand for anymore,” she allegedly wrote: “I am getting harassed by members of the fraternity through social media, through text messages..CONSTANTLY. Because it’s my ‘fault’ I caught their bad actions on camera.”
