Fears based on bogus Democrat/progressive talking points
A coalition of over 50 far-left student groups at the College of William and Mary is demanding the school president “guarantee” students’ constitutional rights in the wake of the coming second Trump presidency.
In a recent letter, the so-called Coalition for the Defense of Democracy at William & Mary — whose members claim they’re “conscious [and] historically-aware” — wants “nothing less than a comprehensive guarantee” from President Katherine Rowe that students’ inalienable rights to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” will not be infringed by the “direct threat” of Donald Trump.
“Trump is the effective leader of an ultranationalist, white supremacist and fascist tide sweeping our country,” the coalition says in the letter. “His campaign for reelection was centered on plans to deport our immigrant communities en masse, further restrict our rights to bodily autonomy and medical care and deploy the military on American citizens arbitrarily deemed ‘enemies.’”
(Actually, Trump promised to deport illegal immigrants, especially criminals, millions of which were arbitrarily allowed to enter the country during the last four years; outright denied claims he would sign a nationwide abortion ban but is against so-called “gender-affirming” care for minors; indicated he might make use of the National Guard in situations of destructive unrest like was seen in the summer of 2020, something not without precedent.)
Interestingly, the coalition notes the “erosion of democratic institutions and popular protections” in the U.S. occurred over the last eight years, which encompasses the entire Biden administration.
The coalition also cites United Nations concerns regarding the “repression” of university-based anti-Israel student protests over the last year, and chides various states’ anti-DEI measures. It alleges Trump will “continue” and “escalate” both.

Groups comprising the coalition include the College Socialists, the Black Poets Society, Dissenters, W&M Fighting for Immigrant Rights and Equity, the Journal of Race, Gender, & Social Justice, Queer Trans People of Color, Political Latinxs for Movement and Action in Society, and the Law Students for Justice in Palestine.
Among other things, the coalition demands William & Mary officials
— abstain from banning student organizations on campus without proper review and a chance to appeal.
— abstain from dismissing faculty or attempting to alter curriculum for ideological purposes without a formal review process or chance to appeal.
— continue providing easily accessible reproductive healthcare and contraception.
— continue providing support for transgender students, including gender-inclusive housing, the Trans Locker and other resources for gender-affirming care.
— continue admitting and supporting students regardless of immigration status, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and undocumented students.
— continue safeguarding students from acts of racism, sexism, ableism, queerphobia, transphobia, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism (distinguished from anti-Zionism) and threats of violence against our community.
Back in September, William & Mary’s Students for Justice in Palestine chapter held a “Keffiyeh Day” on September 12 (the day after the 23rd anniversary of 9/11) in which attendees called for an “intifada revolution” and said “we don’t want two states, take us back to ‘48.” Which means, of course, no Israel.
