FAIL: Professor’s April Fools Joke Doesn’t Go Over So Well

An East Carolina University English professor has apologized for an April Fools prank he pulled – stuffing fliers into the campus’ student newspaper that said the university should use illegal recruiting tactics to better compete in athletics.

The flier was “designed to poke fun of the athletic departments of schools such as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that are facing allegations of corrupt programs,” the East Carolinian newspaper reports.

“The joke is that ECU has a clean athletic program, and that’s why fans are upset,” the professor who pulled the joke, Randall Martoccia, told the newspaper. “It’s meant to be absurd, and that’s what it is, an April Fools joke.”

While the police have decided not to press charges, the prank was viewed as stealing advertising space from the newspaper.
