A top-ranking Facebook executive told a room full of students at the historically black Howard University that until recently, white men ruled the world.
Sheryl Sandberg, a chief operating officer for Facebook, said to students: “Men still rule the world and up until a few years ago, white men still ruled the world,” the Washington Informer reports.
Sandberg, author of the book Lean In, has amassed a fortune estimated at $1.5 to $2 billion as COO of the world’s largest social network. Nevertheless, she has positioned herself as a leading voice against the oppression of women in the workplace.
During the Oct. 15 speech, she also claimed women are afraid to own their accomplishments and, in a round about way, accused students of being fearful, too.
“Put your phones down and think. What would you do if you were not afraid,” she asked.
