SUNY Geneseo Professor Theodore Everett gave a controversial lecture Wednesday night despite student-led protests against his talk, titled “Against Sexual Assault Awareness.”
More than 1,600 students signed an online petition opposing his lecture, calling it insensitive and insulting, but hundreds of students still came out to hear him speak, reports Your News Now-Rochester:
“Sexual assault is receiving too much attention relative to other serious college problems, like alcohol abuse, which has claimed a human life here at Geneseo every other year,” Everett said.
Everett says while sexual assault is a serious problem, it has been exaggerated to a point where women see themselves as vulnerable, and have become afraid of “ordinary. decent men.”
“The problem of sexual assault is very serious and very real, but has been exaggerated in academic and government reports, and policies and laws, in such a way that it has burgeoned lately from a problem to a crisis,” said Everett.
Everett says he is only “against much of what’s called sexual assault awareness.” He says too many borderline cases “divert attention away from the truly damaging core cases of rape and sexual assault.”
