Concordia University has spent nearly $300,000 to repair windows smashed and shattered by pro-Palestinian protesters last fall.
The student newspaper the Link recently obtained documents detailing the cost of repairs to the Canada-based institution: “$277,262.21 to supply and install new windows and $9,642 on wooden boards to temporarily hide the vandalism. The university also spent $2,333.80 at the Concordia Print Store on black panels to further conceal the damage featuring temporary signage with the Concordia 50th anniversary logo.”
The damage occurred during a Sept. 29 demonstration and the expense came at time when the institution is grappling with budget cuts, a hiring freeze, and a reduction in classes due to low enrollment, the Link reported.
Concordia is not alone in being forced to shell out piles of cash on pro-Palestinian protest repairs.
As The College Fix previously reported, security and cleanup expenses related to pro-Palestinian protests last spring cost the University of California system at least $29 million. Campuses such as UCLA and UC Santa Cruz were thrashed by demonstrators.
At California State Polytechnic University at Humboldt, administrators estimated the cost to clean up trash and graffiti from a takeover of one of its buildings last spring is “in the millions,” the Los Angeles Times reported.
At the University of Vermont, campus police put the estimated cost to clean up about 40 pro-Palestinian graffiti markings at more than $3,500, My NBC 5 reported.
Massive damage was also done to Columbia University’s Hamilton Hall last spring after anti-Israel protesters took over and ransacked the building.
Portland State University’s library was also severely vandalized. At Stanford, the takeover of the president’s office last June included vandalism and spray paint on numerous windows. In September, the University of Pennsylvania’s statue of Ben Franklin with doused in red paint.
