The College Board reports the national nightmare continues: Public college tuition increases continue to outpace private school tuition increases, and both increased at greater rates than the national average rate of inflation:
At public 4-year schools, average tuition and fees rose 8.3 percent to $8,244 for in-state students and 5.7 percent to $20,770 for out-of-state students, not including room, board, or extra expenses like travel, laptops and midnight pizzas.
Private nonprofit four-year schools raised their tuition and fees by 4.5 percent, to an average of $28,500, according to the study, Trends in College Pricing 2011, released by the College Board Advocacy & Policy Center. The Consumer Price Index increased 3.6 percent between July 2010 and July 2011, the study noted.
As noted above, the College Board measures just tuition costs — which can be significantly less than the total cost of attending a university each year. Earlier this month, CampusGrotto.com released their annual rankings of the most expensive schools in the country (housing included): Nineteen universities now charge more than $55,000. When Campus Grotto started the rankings in 2007, only one school’s tuition and fees topped $50,000 (GW) — now 111 do.
