A Chinese citizen and University of Michigan student who faces charges for ineligible voting is still on the state’s voter rolls, The Federalist reported Tuesday.
Student Haoxiang Gao, who lives in the country legally but is ineligible to vote because he is not a U.S. citizen, faces two felony charges — false swearing to register to vote and an unqualified elector attempting to vote, the outlet reported.
Despite this, officials still counted his ballot in the recent election. Moreover, even though a criminal case is pending against him he is still on the voter rolls, according to Qualified Voter File data for November provided to Check My Vote, The Federalist reported.
Gao allegedly registered and voted on Oct. 27 at the University of Michigan, where there’s more lax procedures around same-day and early voting procedures.
The voting site on campus was set up in the university’s Museum of Art; it was run by Democrats and served as a “fun … one-stop-shop” to help boost voter turnout, as The College Fix previously reported.
Gao “signed a document identifying himself as a U.S. citizen and his ballot was entered into a tabulator,” The Detroit News reported.
Check My Vote founder Phani Mantravadi told The Federalist: “The fact that this noncitizen is still on the voter rolls shows ineptitude on the part of the SOS [secretary of state] towards maintaining accuracy in our voter rolls. Certainly doesn’t inspire confidence in our election systems. Makes one wonder where the tax dollars allocated to voter roll maintenance are going.”
Mantravadi told the outlet he’s started a challenge process to flag Gao’s voter registration, adding “citizen oversight of voter rolls in their municipalities is important.”
Patrice Johnson, chair of the nonprofit Michigan Fair Elections, told The Federalist it’s “baffling” and “inexcusable” Gao is still on the voter rolls and he should have been removed “immediately.”
“They should respond by transparently investigating and remedying the mistake,” Johnson said. “If this is a systemic problem, which it may well be, state officials need to fix it.”
