New York gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino held a private meeting with the College Republicans on Friday at the W Hotel on Union Square.
Paladino, who was two hours late to the event, used his time with the students to explain his reasons for running for governor of the state.
“All over the state of New York, the faces are different but the look is the same,” he said. “People are afraid, people want to know. They want some answers, they want to be grounded. They look at Andrew Cuomo and they say, ‘Can he change his stripes?’ I’ve never seen a zebra change its stripes. It doesn’t work no matter how long you look at them, no matter what time of the day, their stripes are always the same.”
Paladino blamed Cuomo for the current housing crisis and recession. In highlighting the gravity of the budget deficit, he painted a gloomy picture.
“They say if you don’t give us the money or support, your kids are all gonna shrivel up,” Paladino said.
He said he considered himself an average American and would remain nonchalant in response to negative feedback.
“I pledge that I’m not your elected official type. I’m an outsider,” he said. “I’m not politically astute and I’m not politically polished. I’m just your everyday regular person.”
