College Fix founder: There’s never been a better time for young conservatives to join field of journalism

‘It’s a great fun field,’ says John J. Miller, founder of The College Fix

Gone are the days when much of America got its news from a nightly television broadcast led by Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings or Dan Rather.

The age of the internet has blown the field of journalism wide open and carved many new pathways for conservative- and libertarian-minded media outlets to shape the national conversation, said John J. Miller, founder and executive director of The College Fix, in an interview Monday with the Daily Signal podcast.

Today’s modern media can be “riotous” and “messy,” but there’s great journalism being done, and it’s better than the limited news outlets of past decades, he said.

“It’s a cacophonous, cantankerous kind of world of media and journalism right now — and it’s never been a better environment for conservatives,” Miller said.

“It has its frustrations,” he added, “but conservatives have a louder voice today than they have ever had before in the media, and one of our challenges now is to populate this media with good writers, good talkers. We need more … talented people coming in.”

That’s where The College Fix comes in. Its editors serve as mentors, coaches and trainers who take “amateurs who want to try this out and turn them into professionals,” Miller said.

“As conservatives we are always complaining about liberal media bias, the left dominates the media — and that’s all true, it does,” he said. “But the number one reason that’s true is because not enough conservatives go into the profession. And if we are ever going to solve this problem more need to think about it professionally.”

Miller said once students give it a try they often realize it’s a blast.

“I love it. I can’t imagine doing another thing,” said Miller, who regularly contributes to National Review and The Wall Street Journal, among other publications. “It’s a great fun field to be in and you feel like you’re in a conversation about the topics of the day, you’re staying up with the news, you’re breaking stories, you’re giving interpretations, and so on — what an amazing opportunity.”

“What we are saying is please, come join us. And with The College Fix … you can come try it out, we will work with you,” Miller said.
