Anti-Trump protests break out at UC-Irvine, other California campuses, following election results

A “spontaneous protest” of about 300 people broke out at the University of California-Irvine around 10:30 last evening, shortly after Hillary Clinton conceded the 2016 presidential election to rival Donald Trump.

Overall, it lasted roughly an hour and a half, “as students marched around residential halls and several other buildings on campus. Some protesters shouted profanities and ‘Dump Trump’ while holding clenched fists above their heads,” according to The Orange County Register.

Urban Planning major David Morales said some of the protesters “fear UC Irvine campus Republicans will continue to target them with hateful rhetoric” now that Trump has won. (College Republicans … targeting others for hatred? On a west coast campus??)

Business major Israel Foss was concerned about the entire planet: “I fear for the whole world,” he said. “We wanted to have an expression of solidarity in support of our diversity.”

Other colleges and locations in the state saw demonstrations, as well.

Morales said UC Irvine police were present during the march but did not appear to make any arrests. Campus police could not be immediately reached for comment.

Another protest may happen on campus Wednesday, Morales said. “I wouldn’t say this is the last time,” he added.

In Los Angeles County, several hundred students were protesting the presidential election results on UCLA’s campus in Westwood. …

Smaller demonstrators were held at University of California campuses and neighborhoods in Berkeley, Davis and at San Jose State.

And in downtown Los Angeles, a group of protesters marched Tuesday night, beginning at Pershing Square and eventually rallying and chanting on the steps of City Hall.

Police said a small crowd of about 15 people gathered shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday near Pershing Square located at 532 S. Olive St. The crowd grew to several dozen people and eventually reached L.A. City Hall.

Around 2 a.m. Wednesday, the crowd was gathered on the City Hall steps, chanting slogans such as “We stand together!” No arrests were reported. …

KNTV-TV reported that protesters burned Trump in effigy, smashed windows of the Oakland Tribune newsroom and set tires and trash on fire. There’s no word on any arrests.
