“All That,” “Kenan and Kel,” other ’90s Nick shows will return next week

Sometimes, dreams do come true:

Starting next Monday, TeenNick, part of the Nickelodeon family of cable channels for children, will start rebroadcasting old series from the 1990s that are considered classics by young adults. That’s right: classics from the 1990s. …

The repeats will run between midnight and 4 a.m. under the title “The ’90s Are All That,” a reference to one of Nickelodeon’s most popular shows in that decade, “All That.” That sketch comedy show (1994 to 2005) is one of the first to be featured in the block, along with the sitcoms “Clarissa Explains It All” (1991 to 1994) and “Kenan & Kel” (1996 to 2001) and the cartoon “Doug” (1991 to 1994).

Like many people currently in their twenties, I grew up watching classic Nickelodeon shows. In college, I realized I wasn’t alone. I could spend hours talking to random strangers about the genius of “All That,” the mad antics of “Kenan and Kel,” and so on. And thanks to social media, Nickelodeon executives now realize that, too:

A group of Nickelodeon interns last summer added up the Facebook pages and groups and found then that there were nine million apparent fans of the old shows. (Now, Nickelodeon says, the total is up to 15 million.) During an annual opportunity that some interns are given to pitch programs or projects, the group presented the Facebook fan data and pitched a reruns block. Ms. Zarghami said the pitch influenced the eventual scheduling change. …

Ms. Zarghami said the network would continue to monitor comments and conduct polls on Facebook. “We’ll have the audience pick where we go next,” she said.

What other Nick shows would you like to see back on the air? Here’s my top 10 List (some of these appear likely to be returning, according to Wikipedia):

10). “Rocko’s Modern Life” — Filbert the turtle was my favorite. Turn the page, wash your hands. Turn the page, wash your hands. Remember?

9). “Kablam” — The ‘Prometheus and Bob’ episodes were my favorite.

8). “The Adventures of Pete & Pete” — I was too young to appreciate this show when it was on, but I know people love it.

7). “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” — I remember ‘The Tale of Badge’ being the scariest… and the one with the monster in the school swimming pool.

6). “Salute Your Shorts” — I can’t recall a single thing about this show, except that I really loved it.

5). “Rugrats” — In many ways the definitive Nick cartoon, “Rugrats” was entertaining for kids, teens, and adults, despite being about babies.

4). “Legends of the Hidden Temple” — I bleed Monkey green. Sure, the Silver snakes ALWAYS make it to the Temple, but the Green Monkeys actually seal the deal when they do get there. The Purple Parrots were, if memory serves me, always the first out.

3). “Hey Arnold!” — A show beyond its time. I particularly liked the episode where Arnold played chess with a man who lived in the sewer in order to win back his grandfather’s pocket watch.

2). “The Secret World of Alex Mack” — About 1,000 times better than NBC’s “Heroes.”

1). “Space Cases” — This show is less well-known, even among Nick fans. Essentially, it was Star Trek for kids. The plots were good, the guest stars were awesome (George Takei, Katey Segal), and the theme song is unforgettable.
