Affirmative action vetoed in California

California Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed a bill that would have reinstated race-based preferences in college admittance decisions. While the governor said he supports affirmative action, the bill would have conflicted with existing state law. Voters across the state passed a constitutional amendment banning the measure in 1996.

The University of California, Berkeley, chapter of the College Republicans praised Brown’s veto. Two weeks ago, the group organized a bake sale event designed to satirize the logic behind affirmative action, drawing considerable controversy.
