4 Players Suspended for Texas Tech v. Minnesota Bowl Game

On Wednesday, ESPN reported that three Texas Tech players had been deemed ineligible to play in Friday’s Meineke Car Care Bowl. Minnesota also disqualified one player for the big game.

Texas Tech spokesman Blayne Beal on Monday would not divulge the rules violated. He says Red Raiders starting defensive back Cornelius Douglas, Chris Payne, a linebacker who played mostly on Texas Tech’s special teams, and backup defensive tackle Leon Mackey won’t play in the bowl game.

Minnesota freshman receiver Andre McDonald will also miss the game because of a violation of team rules. He was seventh on the Gophers with 10 catches.

A press release on the official Texas Tech athletics website clarified the cause for two of the three player suspensions.

Acting head coach Chris Thomsen said two of the players missed practices this month in Lubbock without notifying coaches in advance, and said privacy laws prevented him discussing the other player’s suspension.

It is illegal for universities to publicly disclose a student’s academic records. It is also illegal to publicize the results of a drug test.
