Baltimore to provide students ‘free’ buses, lunches, t-shirts for march against gun violence

The mayor of Baltimore, Maryland has pledged to provide 60 “free” buses to transport up to 3,000 city school students to Washington DC next week so they can participate in the March For Our Lives.

Lunches and t-shirts also will be provided for students.

Mayor Catherine Pugh “called for thousands” to attend the march, the alleged “student-led rally calling for gun control legislation,” according to CBS Baltimore.

From the story:

Students at Dulaney High School in Timonium plan to join the nationwide school walkout, inspired by survivors of the shooting.

“I thought it was very important for public schools to be involved because they seem to be the main targets,” said Olivia Summons of Dulaney High School in Timonium.

The high school junior is organizing the protest at Dulaney.

“Schools should never be a combat zone. Students shouldn’t feel like they have to arm themselves or teachers shouldn’t feel like they have to arm themselves physically, just in order to get an education,” Summons said.

She expects teachers will join students to advocate for stricter gun regulation. …

Students at Richard Montgomery and Bethesda-Chevy Chase also walked out of their classrooms on Feb. 21 and took the Metro to D.C. to call for gun legislation. The demonstration came one week after the Florida school massacre.

Students at Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda are organizing a network of roughly 200 host families for out-of-town peers coming to the area for the march.

“It is all about hearing the voices of young people,” Mayor Pugh said. “Let’s show Washington, D.C., that Baltimore matters.”

Baltimore Police Commissioner Darryl De Sousa added he is behind students “1,000 percent.”

Organizers of the Women’s March have been “encouraging students, teachers and supporters to walk out of schools” on March 24. A possible monkey wrench in that effort is the current scandal its founders are facing due to their support for, and unwillingness to speak out against, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
