An op-ed published Sunday by The New York Times offers a common sense approach to the problem of the campus rape epidemic. Written by Ross Douthat, it posits that it can be rectified, but it means some tough love for young people. And clearly, they need some.
In a nutshell, Douthat writes that a combination of changes would address the issue: lawmakers should reduce the legal drinking age to 18 from 21; college administrators should break their schools’ symbiotic relationship with the on-campus party scene; and colleges could embrace a more limited version of the old “parietal” system, in which they separated the sexes and supervised social life.
Ultimately, are leaders willing to make the tough decisions to help young people who are clearly in over their heads? It’s good advice, but Douthat himself questions whether those in charge have the moral fortitude to do the right thing.
