HOAX: Colo. State U. frat’s ‘blackface’ banner due to ink bleeding

Black student went to social media to attack fraternity as racist

An alleged “blackface” banner outside of a frat house at Colorado State University turned out to just look that way due to rain and lighting.

“We want you to rush Lambda Chi,” the banner said in September, using a drawing of Uncle Sam, as reported by the Coloradoan at the time. The newspaper reported the banner had “what appears to be blackface paint on the face and hand.”

The real reason is much simpler and less deviant according to reporting now picked up by other outlets.

The newspaper reported on Wednesday:

The two parties, along with the university, issued a joint statement in which the student said the Gamma Pi Zeta chapter of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity did not intentionally create a banner to portray blackface and the fraternity apologized for the strain the situation caused.

The statement also says the fraternity acknowledges “that the interaction their members had with the reporting student caused harm.”

Members reportedly confronted Valentine. Though there were accusations of racial slurs, they were not caught on video, according to the Atlanta Black Star.

The Coloradoan reported on the statements. Though they reportedly came out in September, the local newspaper said the university just sent them over responding to a request for an update. However, the student newspaper did report on the new comments in September.

Valentine stated:

In my conversations with the president of Lambda Chi Alpha, Jace, I have recognized that the fraternity themselves did not intentionally create a banner to portray blackface. With our discussions, procedures, and open communication, they were able to recognize the unintended harms done while also coming to an understanding between all parties.

Meanwhile, the fraternity stated:

Lambda Chi Alpha apologizes for the strain that this had on the CSU and Fort Collins community. We are committed to making sure that Lambda Chi Alpha supports diversity and inclusion within all aspects of the community. With the open communications we have been able to have with Corey, we have been able to work through this situation and come to an understanding together.

Video posted on social media showed people pointing out the lighting probably changed the hue of Uncle Sam’s face.
